From the ACCT Board, we would like to wish our ACCT family a season of joy and a prosperous New Year in 2018. During this holiday season, we are aware that we are a cooperative of many faiths and the Board extends its greetings to all ACCT members. Let us celebrate spirituality over materialism. Lord's love over sadness, and light over darkness. Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Blessed Eid! Happy Holidays! And for those who do not celebrate holidays, have a joyous life! Enjoy the quiet moments spent with family, friends and loved ones and enjoy the traditions of your faith or family. We are grateful that you are part of our community and hope that you will continue to make the ACCT a welcoming and safe place for us all to grow and share as we work together to make ACCT synonymous with excellence in counselling.
A little late in coming but if you have the time what better to celebrate the holidays than hosting an ACCT Holiday Gathering, either in your home or at a selected venue, and have ACCT help with the costs? From now until January 31, 2018, ACCT will reimburse your food and drink costs up to $15 per person on any gathering that has at least five ACCT members in attendance.
Send the names of those attending and photos from your gatherings and be featured in a future newsletter. These can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
At ACCT, we are building communities one counsellor at a time. This holiday season let us help you build yours.
Please remember to always Drink Responsibly and plan a safe ride home.

All RTC, AC, MTC and RCS members should have received an email from ACCT containing a link to a survey on the proposed changes to Professional Development and Supervision for all members.
ACCT is a professional counselling association that, as a cooperative, is fully member owned and member input is sought, welcomed, valued and used; therefore, it is essential that, if you haven't already done so, you complete this survey.
If you are an RTC, AC, MTC or RCS and you haven't received the email with the link to the survey, please let Sarah know at email@example.com and she will forward you the email.
Q&A's from completed surveys and emails:
Question: Please clarify if there is a required minimum for any of the categories. For example, supervision min of 10 hours?
Answer: For the purposes of the matrix in the Competency Development Proposal attached to the survey, we have used the wording AT LEAST which translates to a minimum of 8 hours of Supervision and minimum of 8 hours of Professional Development are required to be part of the total 30 hours. The remaining 14 hours can be made up of a combination of any or all of the areas (no more than 8 hours can be Self Care).
Question: Am I clear in assuming the "proofs" for audit are only required if said person is one of the four chosen?
Answer: Yes, however, we do recommend you obtain evidence of attendance in case you are audited.
Question: The "at least" and the "no more than" numbers don't add up to 30. Might it be confusing to some?
Answer: As per the proposal. Supervision: AT LEAST 8 hours – of the 30 required - PD: AT LEAST 8 hours – of the 30 required - Self-Care: NO MORE than 8 hours – of the 30 required.
- Counsellor 1: Supervision 10 hrs (8 required + 2) – PD – 15 hrs (8 required + 7) – Self Care 5 hrs = 30 hrs
- Counsellor 2: Supervision 8 hrs – PD 22 hrs – Self Care 0 = 30 hrs
- Counsellor 3: Supervision 8 hrs – PD 14 hrs – Self Care 8 hrs = 30 hrs
Question: NOTE: MTCs and RCSs may satisfy supervision hours via reciprocal supervision. What is reciprocal supervision?
Answer: MTCs and RCSs have the option of creating a contractual agreement between group members with a minimum of 5 years experience (post eligibility for clinical membership of their respective professional Associations) to provide reciprocal supervision of counselling practice.
Question: Can I use the hours that I offer to ACCT counsellors as a supervisor as part of my professional development - learning through contribution hours?
Answer: Yes. Learning Through Contribution may include:
- Serving on Committees or Boards
- Service, example pro bono work
Question: This does, however, change the requirements for already busy counsellors and my concern would be that consideration be given to those whose renewal dates approach soon after this implementation.
Answer: As an example, if the proposal is approved and implemented by December 31, 2017, those counsellors renewing on or prior to December 31, 2018, will adhere to the current criteria for renewal. For renewals after January 1, 2019, those counsellors will have had a year since their last renewal to follow the Competency Development Model.
After another successful AGM and Conference, we would like to announce that next years meeting will be held Friday, October 12 - Saturday, October 13, 2018, at the Executive Inn and Suites Burnaby. Stay tuned for more details.
Thank you to those who completed the recent AGM surveys. We will take your comments into consideration as we begin to plan for next year.

PD SESSION AND CHRISTMAS SOCIAL
It was great to see you all last Thursday at the PD Session on the FACT BC Competency Model and Christmas Social. To those members who were able to attend thank you for joining us. It's always a pleasure to meet new members and to reconnect with those we already know.
We'd like to thank Joanie Tara, our resident FACT BC expert, for her presentation. There were some really good questions and discussion around the FACT BC Competency Model.
It is important that all members are familiar with the FACT BC Competency Model as we move towards regulating counselling in BC. The current FACTBC Competency Standards can be found at :
